From the trail head, the trail is marked by blue markers. The trail starts out following a gravel road for 1.8m that is mostly level with some moderate climbs. After veering off of the road to the right, the trail crosses two brooks via bridges and starts climbing moderately after a half of a mile from the road. The trail continues on a steady climb and passes the old Santanoni Trail which is now closed. After a short descent, the trail levels out over a wet section of the trail. After 4.4m you come to the Santanoni Lean-To on your right.

From Santanoni Lean-To, the trail descends for over a mile alongside and sometimes with the brook. From here, the trail becomes mostly level crossing several streams and brooks. After 3.6m, you come to the foot of Duck Hole and the Duck Hole Lean-To Number 1 on your left.
