Trail begins at the parking lot of the Adirondack Loj at Trail Register. Trail crosses Algonquin Brook via bridge at 0.4m and veers right. This section of trail crosses several ski trails which can make traveling easier during the winter. Trail reaches junction of Van Hoevenberg Trail and Algonquin Trail at 1.0 m.

Stay to the Left at the Junction with the Algonquin Trail if you are coming from the Adirondack Loj. This section of trail is relatively flat, with some short climbs. Trail reaches Marcy Dam after 1.3 m.

Once you reach Marcy Dam, you will cross the dam and come to a Trail Register. Marcy Dam has six (6) lean-tos that surround the pond. There is a small trail that circles the pond with gives access to the lean-tos. In 0.1 m the Van Hoevenberg Trail comes to a junction with the Avalanche Pass Trail.

If heading from Marcy Dam, stay left at junction with the Avalanche Pass Trail. The trail is of easy to moderate grade until you run into the junction with the Phelps Mountain Trail after 0.8 m.

From the junction with the Phelps Mtn Trail, the trail crosses a bridge and is a steady climb that reaches some steeper sections. After the steep sections the trail levels off a bit. After 1.2 m you will come to a junction with the Indian Falls-Lake Arnold Crossover Trail marked by yellow markers.

From the junction with the Indian Falls-Lake Arnold Crossover Trail, the trail starts off mostly level then turns to very steep for 0.2 m. After the steep sections, the trail levels off and at 0.8 m you come to a junction with the Hopkins Trail.

From the junction of the Hopkins Trail, the trail is a steady climb, traveling through some thick brush. After 0.4 m you will reach a junction with the Phelps Trail marked with red markers.

From the junction of the Phelps Trail, the trail goes through some woods then is mostly open rock. Once you reach the timberline, stay on trail using cairns and yellow paint. At 0.6 m you reach the Summit of Mt Marcy. On the summit, the trail connects with the Calamity Brook Trail.
