From the junction with the Woodsfall Trail and Klondike Notch Trail, the trail starts out mostly level. Camping is now permitted on the right side of the trail just past the last junction. From here, the trail starts to climb. The climbing begins getting steep and eases off around a mile and a half. The trail stays mostly level with some moderate climbing until you reach the junction with the Marcy via Hopkins Trail to the right marked with yellow markers after 1.5m. The Phelps Trail now switches to red markers.

From the junction with the Phelps Trail at Bushnell Falls, follow the yellow markers. The trail starts out with a moderate climb. The trail then descends down a ravine and back up and levels off again. The trail then crosses a brook and starts a steep climb. After the steep climb, the trail alternates between moderate climbing to steep climbing until you reach the junction with the Van Hoevenberg Trail after 2.8m.

From the junction of the Hopkins Trail, the trail is a steady climb, traveling through some thick brush. After 0.4 m you will reach a junction with the Phelps Trail marked with red markers.

From the junction of the Phelps Trail, the trail goes through some woods then is mostly open rock. Once you reach the timberline, stay on trail using cairns and yellow paint. At 0.6 m you reach the Summit of Mt Marcy. On the summit, the trail connects with the Calamity Brook Trail.
