Know and Respect the rules and regulations that the NYSDEC has set forth. If you have any questions on the rules and regulations of the Adirondack State Park, please contact your local DEC office or go to www.dec.state.ny.us. Some important rules and regulations that you should know about before you go out into the Adirondacks:
  • 150 Foot Rule- This regulation regards to several things in the Adirondack Park. There is no camping anywhere within 150 feet of any body of water, trail, or road, unless designated by the DEC. You are prohibited to do any washing of dishes or such within 150 feet of any body of water, including streams and springs. When dealing with waste, one must bury any waste under six inches of soil and it must not be within 150 feet of any body of water.
  • Camping- You can only camp in designated camping areas inside the Adirondack Park. The DEC has designated certain areas as campsites, and they are posted with a marker on a tree. The DEC has designated these campsites so that we can keep areas not disturbed by people, undisturbed. If backpacking, you can camp wherever you like but must always comply with the 150 foot rule.
  • Fires- When camping, please keep all fires to designated fire pits only. Please do not make your own. When extinguishing fires, make sure that the fire is out completely, this includes the hot embers at the base of the fire. If these embers are not extinguished, they can start a fire right back up again which could cause a wild fire which none of us want!
When hiking or camping with a pet such as a dog, there are a couple things to keep in mind. Use common courtesy. More and more hikers are bringing their pets with them on trips. If you see an approaching hiker(s), keep your pet next to you or on a leash. Not every person out there is a dog lover. When dealing with your animal’s waste, you should do the same thing with theirs as you would do with yours. Either bag your pet’s waste and bring it out with yours, or burry it at least 6 inches below the surface and 150 feet away from any trail or road. Waste is something that no one wants to see when visiting the Adirondacks.
